How to Choose an Industrial Temperature Sensor

A practical selection checklist based on Temptech RTD, thermocouple, thermowell, pyrometer and instrument specifications.

Start with five inputs: required temperature range, contact or non-contact measurement, installation method, signal/control requirement and any custom construction needs.

  1. Temperature range. Compare the application range with the RTD, thermocouple and pyrometer ranges in the catalog.
  2. Contact method. RTDs and thermocouples are contact sensors; handheld and online pyrometers provide non-contact options.
  3. Installation and protection. Thermowells provide flanged, screwed, tapered and other protection/mounting configurations.
  4. Monitoring or control. Indicators, scanners and controllers accept common T/C, RTD and process inputs.
  5. Custom requirements. Temptech offers application-specific engineering around the required specifications.
